I love to eat and move and care for myself. I cherish myself—and treat myself accordingly. I'm clear about what to do, AND I enjoy it. As a result, my body performs at peak for everything I'm up to in life. And I want to share that ease.
But I also know what it's like to be feel lousy in your body and confused about how to fix it.
I was the fat kid for my whole childhood, teased mercilessly and picked last for every team (which left me afraid of sports for my first 20 years). By the time I was in high school, like many girls I'd mindlessly dieted my way to "thin," but that didn't mean healthy. I still had no clue how to eat or otherwise care for myself.
In my early 20s, I was plagued with assorted nagging chronic health conditions from bladder infections to sinus infections to food allergies to thyroid issues and PMS. (Chronic dieting and alternating couch-surfing with binge-exercising didn't help.)
At 25, when I trained for months for a marathon and ended up fatter, I'd finally had enough. I hit up some college-level physiology and nutrition textbooks. And I looked up and said...
I'm natural-born explainer, and someone who likes to share good news and spread the wealth (plus, people wanted to know what I was doing, because I got super lean and healthy—and stayed that way).
So BodyFueling was born. I started teaching workshops. Word spread. I taught at companies, schools, leadership programs. And then I wrote a book (which became a surprise bestseller in the 1990s).
Then I started learning about natural medicine, apprenticed with an herbalist who helped me heal all those chronic nagging conditions—and wrote a book (with him) about that.
I began to see my health and life as inseparable, and as no greater priority. With an experience of complete choice, I sought to nourish myself in the cleanest, healthiest way possible. I put self-care first, so that I could assist others. I WANTED to do the healthiest things—to have the body and energy that let me live and give my best.
I had made a shift—and I've helped many others make it too. I wasn’t on any kind of “plan,” I just discerned what works and lived accordingly—driven by what I MOST wanted. I made choices that reflected my values. I fueled my passions and my purpose—something that anyone who's "up to something" needs to do, too.
And it showed. By the time I was 40, everyone I met still thought I was 25, and as I aged into my 40s, people still thought I was in my 30s. And at 50? Same! MUCH more important than appearance, though, I felt that young. I had (and have!) abundant energy, and my health is radiant and vibant in a way that really shows. I look it and I feel it.
Best of all, I'm joyful. I have an ease with this whole area of life that few people seem to. In a world where this is as rare as the dodo, I have a relationship to food, fitness, and overall self-care that is happy, clear, and powerful.
AND I'VE HAD THIS FOR 25 YEARS. I'm sure you can see why I want to share it.
I took a long hiatus from my early success as a health author and speaker (back then, there were no social platforms, and “online” wasn’t a thing, and I had other interests too). I spent my supercharged energy and radiant health becoming an award-winning performing songwriter and a freelance environmental writer, among many other things.
But a few years ago, I realized that I HAD to bring my voice back into this arena.
I see SO many people suffering in the same ways they were two decades ago. In spite of a mega-explosion of information, so many people are still confused, overwhelmed, jaded, discouraged.
Most people are still not feeling and looking like they want to, and are needlessly fearing and dreading disease and aging, unaware of their power.
